Join APEGBC for breakfast and a presentation by Dr. Briony Croft, P.Eng. The presentation will cover how rail noise policy is applied in a range of contexts in Canada and worldwide, such as new rail projects, upgraded/expanded rail projects, developments near railways, new/upgraded rolling stock, and existing rail operations (including noise abatement).
This topic will be of interest to acousticians, but also to engineers working in the rail industry, regulators, council engineers and planners, those involved in new developments affected by rail noise, or simply those who live near a rail line and notice the noise impacts.
The idea for this session arose in preparing a keynote paper for the 2016 International Workshop on Railway Noise (IWRN). Drawing on topics presented at this conference, the presentation and discussion will cover how rail noise policy is applied in a range of contexts in Canada and worldwide, such as new rail projects, upgraded/expanded rail projects, developments near railways, new/upgraded rolling stock, and existing rail operations (including noise abatement).
In each worldwide region, the key existing and historical rail noise issues would be described, to understand why particular policies and approaches have been developed, and how effective those policies have been. For example, approaches to manage level crossing noise and diesel locomotive noise are different in Europe, Australia and North America. The outlook for future rail noise policy in Canada would then be discussed, by inviting audience suggestions for case studies.

Dr. Briony Croft is a railway noise and vibration specialist, with fourteen years of experience. Her doctorate research in railway contact mechanics investigated a fundamental source of railway noise and vibration. She has worked in Europe on EU funded collaborative rail noise research projects, in Australia on major freight and passenger rail projects, and is now an acoustic consultant based in Canada. Briony has published papers in academic journals, and presented at various international acoustics, railway noise, contact mechanics and heavy haul rail conferences. Her areas of research focus include the long term effectiveness of acoustic rail grinding; the development of rail roughness and corrugation; rail dampers and rolling noise mitigation; and modelling diesel freight train noise.
