FACULTY SPEAKERS 

Consultant - Gary Pooni, Brook Pooni Associates

Gary Pooni is responsible for driving the firm's growth and managing major client projects in Metro Vancouver and the Lower Mainland. Gary was appointed President in October 2008 and was named and honoured as one of Business in Vancouver's "Top Forty under 40" recipients in 2009. In his role as president and senior planner, Gary has worked on projects throughout the Lower Mainland, the Sea to Sky corridor and throughout BC. His expertise spans planning principles, policy planning, public consultation and advanced skills in negotiation and facilitation. Gary is highly active in the community; chairing Urban Development Institute Liaison Committees in several municipalities as well as serving as a Director of the Indo-Canadian Friendship Society, which provides funding and resources for infrastructure and community development in Punjab, India. 

Consultant - Bob Ransford, Century Group

Bob Ransford has worked in the urban development sector for close to three decades. He is Vice President, Acquisitions and Investments for Century Group. Prior to joining Century Group, Bob worked as an independent public affairs consultant and urban designer specializing in navigating the complex public processes surrounding urban development issues and complicated land use challenges. He has an extensive understanding of public policy development, the political process, public affairs and communications, having pursued an earlier career at a senior political level in governments in Ottawa and Victoria. He has a certificate in Urban Design from Simon Fraser University and studied Charrette Planning at the Harvard Graduate School of Design. He is also accredited by the Congress for the New Urbanism.

Municipal - Lisa Spitale, City of New Westminster

Lisa Spitale is the Chief Administrative Officer for the City of New Westminster. She holds a Masters degree in Planning from the University of British Columbia and is a Registered Professional Planner, with 30 years of experience.  Lisa has been employed with the City for close to 25 years, now holding the position of CAO for the last three years. Lisa has held several senior management positions at the City including the Director of Development Services managing three departments' Planning, Building Permits, and Licensing and Integrated Services; and the Director of Strategic Services managing economic development, gaming, business and liquor licensing, and bylaw enforcement. Under her leadership, New Westminster has realized unprecedented residential and commercial growth, and has helped spearhead many of the City's most important plans and projects such as the award winning Downtown Community Plan, the 12 time award winning Westminster Pier Park, and the construction of the iconic Anvil Centre and Office Tower.

Communications Specialist - Beth Boyle, Talk Shop Media

In addition to starting a PR firm in 2007 and becoming a Partner behind a million plus brand in 2011, Beth has also developed coaching systems for women in business on how to best market their company. Beth has emerged as one of BC's most accomplished individuals in PR and a Top 40 Under 40 Award recipient. Her company, Talk Shop has also received various awards such as Canada's Top 100 Employers. With over fifteen years experience in real estate and architecture in Canada and the U.S., Beth has been able to create leading PR strategies for major development companies such as Bosa Properties, Grosvenor Americas, Cressey Developments, Ledingham McAllister and Wesgroup Properties. Prior to starting her company in 2007, Beth worked in the development industry and uses this experience to deliver effective and innovative, campaigns, positioning her clients as pioneers in the real estate space. In addition to her role as Partner at Talk Shop, Beth is currently studying at Sauder School of Business for her Urban Land Economics Degree.  Beth also sits on several boards, is a social entrepreneur, an avid volunteer with various local real estate organizations and has served as an instructor at SFU for the PR Certificate Program.

Developer - Jon Stovell, Reliance Properties

Jon Stovell has been in the real estate investment and development industry for over 25 years. He works in all areas including acquisitions, finance, civic approvals, construction and marketing. At Reliance, he has developed a broad base of expertise in portfolio management with an emphasis on urban renewal through restoration and renovation of heritage buildings, affordable housing, together with new strata and rental residential and specialty office and retail projects. The firm has earned awards for its work. In 2013 Reliance was named the most innovative company in BC by "BC Business Magazine" for its Burns Block Micro-Lofts. In 2014 Jon was named one of Vancouver Magazine's "Power 50" people. Jon also serves as the Chair for UDI.
 

Developer - Chris Vollan, Rize Alliance Properties

Chris Vollan is Vice President of Development for Vancouver based Rize Alliance Properties, a company with a twenty-five year history of developing urban infill projects throughout Metro Vancouver.  An Okanagan native and engineering graduate from Montreal's McGill University, Chris specialized in the seismic restoration of heritage buildings in Victoria before evolving into real estate development in the Western United States, British Columbia and Alberta.  Chris' recent experience has involved significant rezoning projects in Vancouver, Burnaby, North Vancouver and Surrey City Centre, each of which has involved distinct market, economic and sustainability demands as well as very unique, and always engaging, community stakeholder and municipal processes.
