Public Realm: Learning from Amazing Brentwood, Burnaby, BC

Drawing from his 40 years of practice and teaching, Michael von Hausen will highlight the six fundamental framework elements for next-generation public realm. He will focus on his experience in helping to shape the urban design and public realm concept for “Amazing Brentwood” with the City of Burnaby and Shape Properties.

Burnaby’s mayor Mike Hurley will introduce Michael and provide opening remarks. Michael’s presentation will be followed by a panel discussion moderated by veteran urbanist and former Vancouver city councillor Gord Price, who will further explore the successes and lessons learned from “Amazing Brentwood” as it continues to grow and evolve as a “creative” town centre. Panellists will include Darren Kwiatkowski, executive vice-president, Shape Properties; Andy Yan, director of the City Program at Simon Fraser University; Derek Lee, principal with PWL Partnership; Jennifer Stamp, principal, Groundswell Landscape Architecture; and a representative from the City of Burnaby staff (TBD).
