Event Description:

Many of us admire the beauty of architecture, but have you ever thought about the engineering that makes it possible?  In a time of rising construction costs, upcoming building code changes, and an urgent need to reduce embodied carbon, maximizing structural efficiency is more important than ever.
Join Harrison Glotman, P.Eng, SE, a Principal at one of North America's top engineering firms, Glotman Simpson Consulting Engineers, as he simplifies the basics of structural engineering in a friendly, approachable way. Harrison will give us a quick crash course on how we can do this, sharing insights from real projects, including the building you're in, CRAFT, and other local landmarks. He will also explore the impacts of the imminent structural code change and will highlight what to consider when fresh architectural plans land on your desk.
After the discussion, enjoy a drink with your colleagues under the retrofitted wood trusses that you will have a newfound appreciation for!
Speaker:
Harrison Glotman is a Principal at Glotman Simpson with several years of experience working on complex projects across Canada and the U.S. Prior to joining Glotman Simpson, Harrison worked on high-end homes and retrofits in some of the most iconic buildings in New York and San Francisco. He completed his Master of Science in Structural Engineering with a full scholarship to Stanford University where he specialized in seismic engineering. The knowledge gained through this degree has proven to be incredibly valuable in building design on the West Coast.
Since joining Glotman Simpson in 2017, Harrison has lent his expertise to a diverse portfolio of projects, encompassing mass timber offices, steel schools, and concrete towers. Collaborating closely with our Sustainability Committee, Harrison is instrumental in ensuring our firm remains at the forefront of innovation in low embodied carbon design. He has also been an active contributor to industry knowledge, sharing his insights on Mass Timber and sustainability at various conferences.
