Name: SOLD OUT - UDI Seminar: Legal Updates 2018
Date: December 4, 2018
Time: 7:15 AM - 9:15 AM PST
Event Description:

1 hour of CPD credit applicable

We are excited to conclude 2018's seminar season with our December breakfast on updates to a few critical legal issues for our industry:

  • Recent details on Speculation Tax (under Bill 45
  • Property Tax
  • City of Vancouver Vacant Home Tax
  • Luxury School Tax
  • Pre-Sale Assignment Registry - regulations just released ten days ago, with requirements that developers must follow effective Jan. 1, 2019
  • Land Owner Transparency Act (LOTA)

Mark Lewis of Bennett Jones will moderate this discussion as we explore these crucial matters with our distinguished panel.

Featured panel:

PAUL SULLIVAN - Principal, Burgess Cawley Sullivan & Associates

Paul Sullivan is a senior partner at Burgess Cawley Sullivan & Associates, will use recent case studies to review how developers can protect themselves from unnecessarily large tax bills stemming from both air space parcel subdivisions and split class tax assessments. In 2010, Paul led UDI's Taxation Committee to successfully amend the regulation on vacant mixed-use development land. Prior to the amendment, mixed-use sites were often classified as 100% commercial; now, mixed-use may be considered 'split class'. However, recent appeals have revealed shortcomings with the wording in zoning bylaws that have resulted in higher property taxes being paid by developers. Paul will share his thoughts on how zoning bylaws should be written to take full advantage of the amendment.
