Event Description:
Join the Urban Development Institute (UDI) and the Planning Institute of B.C. (PIBC) for these organizations’ first collaborative event. Delve into both sides of the approvals process as developers and planners discuss how they were able to overcome the sites’ challenges and to work together to find mutually agreeable solutions.
Structured to broaden knowledge level and encourage communication, exchange of ideas, and networking with peers in both private and public sectors. This webinar will examine two recent significant development projects with commentary perspectives from both planners and developers involved with the projects. General lessons learned from this dialogue are applicable across all projects and communities.

 
Panel:
Michael Epp, RPP, MCIP, Director of Planning, City of North Vancouver
Michael is a land use and community planner whose work has ranged from neighbourhood planning and visioning projects in New York City neighbourhoods, to managing the planning department in Gibsons, BC to his current role as Director of Planning for the City of North Vancouver. The current focus of Michael’s work is ensuring that transportation and development are coordinated as the City plans for growth and works to create new housing opportunities for families, seniors and renters.
Carl Funk, RPP, MCIP, Director, Industrial Planning & Development, Beedie  
Carl is responsible for managing entitlements for Beedie’s industrial and commercial projects. He provides leadership and oversight to a growing development team at Beedie. Carl holds a Master’s Degree in Urban and Regional Planning from Queen’s University as well as certificates in construction technology and project management.
Johannes Schumann, Director, Development & Urban Design, City of Burnaby
Johannes is the Director of Development and Urban Design with the City of Burnaby Planning Department.  Over his 20 year career with the City he has lead many of the City’s most influential projects including the Brentwood Mall Masterplan, the Gilmore Place Master Plan, and Riverway Business Park Master Plan.  Having worked in all aspects of land use planning, Johannes got his start working on industrial mixed-employment developments in the City’s Big Bend Development Plan including many signature developments within the Glenlyon Business Centre. Johannes holds a Masters degree in Environmental Studies (Planning) from York University and an BA Honours Degree in Urban and Environmental Geography from UBC.
Kate Sunderland, Senior Development Manager, Concert Properties  
Kate is a graduate of UBC in the SCARP master’s program and has been working in real estate development since 2007. With Development roles at Rize Alliance and Anthem Properties, Kate has found a home with Concert Properties since 2014 and the long-term, master planned project of North Harbour in the City of North Vancouver. She is active in the development community and equally active at home chasing two little kids.
Henry McQueen (Moderator), RPP, MCIP, Vice President, Development, Qualex-Landmark
Henry is the Vice-President of Development at local developer Qualex-Landmark, and brings both public and private sector experience to the real estate development profession, having worked with the City of Toronto previously.
Henry has managed over 4 million square feet of mixed-use development across Canada to-date, ranging in scale from high density master planned communities to single-building mid-rise. In his role Henry is responsible for overseeing the development project pipeline at Qualex-Landmark, assessing project feasibility, developing the strategic vision for each project, and advancing design and approvals through to construction.
Henry is a Registered Professional Planner, and also serves as Vice-Chair of the UDI - Pacific Region’s U40 Executive Committee and Vice-Chair of Co:Here Housing Community.
