Don Pedde, Senior Codes Administrator with the Building and Safety Standards Branch, will provide an overview of the BC Building Code 2018 changes and the impacts of new Part 9 requirements on developers.
Barry Thorson, Professional Engineer and Certified Professional with Thorson McAuley, will explain what the Part 3 code changes mean for developers and outline the new design requirements in the BC Building Code 2018.

Don Pedde
Don Pedde is a Senior Codes Administrator with the Building and Safety Standards Branch. Don has 33 years of experience in the building industry including work as a Journeyman Carpenter, as an Architectural Technician, and as a Chief Building Official. He is a Minister’s Appointee to the Executive Committee of the Building Officials’ Association of BC.
Barry Thorson
Barry Thorson was one of the first of seven Certified Professionals (CP) in the City of Vancouver. Since 1980 he has worked with the Province of BC, the City of Vancouver, EGBC, AIBC and BOABC on numerous building code committees in developing changes and improvements to the BC Building Code and Vancouver Building By-Law, including authoring the letters of assurance, the guide to the letters of assurance, CP letters of assurance and the CP Practice and Procedures Manual.
At any given time, Barry is working as a CP or building code consultant on several dozen projects primarily focused in the City of Vancouver. These projects include all scales of work however generally the focus has been on larger mixed use or institutional buildings following the CP process.
For his 48 years of dedicated contribution to the engineering profession, in 2010, Barry was awarded the Fellow of Engineers Canada (FEC), which is the engineering profession’s equivalent to Queen’s Counsel (QC) in the legal profession.
