Event Description:

This is an important session about the future building requirements in the City of Vancouver and other municipalities.

Next month, city staff will bringing forward a report with recommendations to change Vancouver's Green Rezoning Policy and the Vancouver Building Bylaw to establish mandates in new buildings for:
  1. Green house gas emissions
  2. Energy performance
  3. Water efficiency
The Province is also moving forward with energy efficiency improvements for new buildings. They will implement an "Energy Step Code" (Stretch Code) to allow municipalities to mandate energy efficiency requirements above and beyond the building code. 



Both the Province and the City of Vancouver are seeking changes through their respective building codes to ensure that all new construction is built to near-zero standards in the next 10-15 years - this impacts all UDI members, stakeholders, and local government.

BIO

Sean Pander, Green Building Program Manager, City of Vancouver
 
Sean is a professional engineer with urban planning training. He has been at the forefront of local energy conservation and renewable energy planning and policy work for the past 15 years. He was integral in implementing the City's original Climate Protection Plan and more recently led the team in the development of the City's Greenest City 2020 Action Plan. Sean currently leads the City's Green Building Program team tasked with developing strategies, programs, policies and regulations aimed at having greenhouse gas emissions from all existing buildings and industries reduced by 20% and to achieve carbon-neutral new construction by 2020.

Jarrett Hutchinson,  Acting Executive Director, Building and Safety Standards Branch of the Province of B.C.

Jarrett Hutchinson is the Acting Executive Director of the Building and Safety Standards Branch of the Province of B.C. He has actively worked with the development, application and enforcement of codes, standards and policies at municipal, provincial and national levels.

Tim Lesiuk, Executive Director and Chief Negotiator, Climate Action Secretariat (CAS)

Tim Lesiuk is an Executive Director and Chief Negotiator for the Climate Action Secretariat (CAS), the agency responsible for meeting the province's greenhouse gas (GHG) reduction targets.  The Secretariat is also responsible for achieving annual Carbon Neutrality for government operations, and adaptation policy to ensure the province is prepared for unavoidable changes to the future climate. Prior to joining  CAS, Tim provided strategic and commercial advice to BC Hydro and managed environmental and greenhouse gas issues for Westcoast Energy and Centra Gas BC.
