As we continue to explore options for growth in our cities, one of the most logical answers is expanding vertically with resources easily available to us. On October 18, UDI invites you to join us for an exciting talk on the potential of building with wood in BC. The breakfast session will examine the pros and cons of tall timber and case studies by world-renowned leaders in the field. 



We are excited to welcome from the United Kingdom, Kevin Flanagan of PLP Architecture, the mastermind behind several world-famous tall timber projects. PLP Architecture's conceptual proposal includes the design of a 1,000+ new residential units in a 1 million sq ft mixed-use tower in central London. Hear from Tobi Reyes of PortLiving and Robert Malczyk of Equilibrium, two members of the project team working on Terrace House, the new hybrid timber tower in Vancouver. From Seagate Structures, Nathan Bergen will discuss the 17-storey mass timber hybrid superstructure, Brock Commons Tallwood House, that is home to UBC's student residence.
 
Moderated by Helen Goodland, managing principal of Brantwood Consulting and co-founder of Building Technology Innovations, the panel will present the case for building with timber, dispelling some common misconceptions around the use of this structural material, and aiding the push to change legislation and restrictions on wood frame buildings.

Kevin Flanagan- Partner, PLP ARCHITECTURE 
Kevin Flanagan is a Senior Partner at PLP Architecture, recently voted the most creative company of 1,000 in the UK by the LSE, and is an architect with 33 years' experience establishing a reputation for award-winning designs throughout major world cities. At PLP Architecture Kevin has worked as Designer-Partner on projects that include The EDGE, the World's most sustainable office building developed by OVG Real Estate for Deloitte in Amsterdam. Kevin is currently working on PLP's Oakwood Timber Tower Series, three timber tower proposal together with the University of Cambridge, and Smith and Wallwork Engineers. "PLP" has embraced mass timber-with gusto- inspiring and ambitious.- March 22, 2018, AZURE Magazine.

From feasibility to design for real sites these three proposals imagine the future benefits of city living through the development of laminated timber tall buildings. Exemplary projects, while at KPF, include Provinciehuis (the Provincial Parliament Building) and the De Hoftoren Tower - both in The Hague, Netherlands; and the landmark Abu Dhabi Investment Authority (ADIA) Headquarters building in Abu Dhabi, UAE. Kevin holds a Bachelor of Architecture degree from Carleton University in Canada, and the Architectural Association in London, England and a Master of Architecture from the University of Texas, with a Scholarship in Rome. He is a Past - President and was a long-standing director of the American Institute of Architects' AIA UK Chapter and has served as an international architectural editor. Kevin has lectured and has been exhibited widely, most recently twice at The Summer Exhibition, London. He recently was elevated as a Fellow of the Royal Architectural Association of Canada.

Tobi Reyes- CEO, PORTLIVING
Tobi Reyes is the CEO and Founder of PortLiving, an award-winning, Vancouver-based development company with prime real estate across Canada and the Pacific Northwest. Originally founded in 2003, the PortLiving team has been developing a rich history of innovation and leadership ever since. Tobi leads projects that are demonstrative of a commitment to design, sustainability, craftsmanship and long-term value that is punctuated by groundbreaking, professional collaborations. In addition, he has been highlighted in several real estate articles and is a speaker/panelist for industry events, as an emerging leader in the North American property scene.
 
Outside of development, Tobi’s passion for the environment also inspired him to help co-found The One Earth Initiative where he serves as a member of the Board of Directors. He has spent considerable time in Asia and Europe, is a recent alum of Harvard Business School, loves art, is an oenophile and an unmistakable foodie. Prior to PortLiving and One Earth, Tobi became an entrepreneur in the technology sector upon graduating from Queen’s University in 1996. He is a consistent supporter of several institutions including the BC Cancer Foundation, Vancouver Art Gallery and social housing initiatives.

Robert Malczyk- Principal, EQUILIBRIUM CONSULTING
Robert belongs to a rare breed of university-trained, specialized timber engineers. Following graduation with a Master's degree from Warsaw Technical University, Robert set his eyes on Canada, for an opportunity to study at UBC under the world renowned professor and practicing engineer Borg Madsen, inventor of the now widely used timber rivet connection system. During his last year at UBC, Robert was offered a position with J. Novacek & Associates, a leading innovative Vancouver consulting firm in the field of timber engineering. Robert spent four years with Novacek, where he carried out the structural design of a number of landmark projects such as the Odlum Drive condominium project with architect Peter Cardew and the Engine 374 enclosure at the Vancouver Roundhouse.
 
In 1997, Robert co-founded Equilibrium Consulting Inc. Through his career, Robert has worked on over 600 projects, several of which have received awards, including the Hooded Merganzer Restaurant in Penticton with Nick Bevanda Architect and the Art Gallery of Ontario Galleria Italia with architect Frank Gehry, one of the most complex timber structures ever built. Robert is a long-standing member of the O86 'Engineering Design in Wood' code committee, and a member of the recently formed CLT code committee. Robert is regularly invited to lecture on the subject of timber engineering at national and international symposiums and conferences. Robert is committed to sustainability and energy performance, and was involved in the design of the first 'Passivhaus' projects in Canada.

Nathan Bergen- Director of Operations, SEAGATE STRUCTURES LTD. 
Nate is a carpenter by trade and has a background in saw milling and mass timber. Nate spent more than 7 years working with another leading mass timber company prior to joining seagate in 2014. In addition to Project Management, Nate is responsible for Seagate's estimation team as well as many other day to day activities. His experience has been comprehensive over the last 10 years, covering many pre-fabrication and construction methods and techniques. As each project brings with it unique challenges, Nate has learned to implement practical and innovative solutions. His most recent project was overseeing the wood installation on UBC Brock Commons.

Helen Goodland- Principal, BRANTWOOD CONSULTING (moderator)
Helen Goodland is the managing principal of Brantwood Consulting to which she brings over 30 years of experience working on transformative solutions for the real estate and construction industries in Canada and around the world. She is co-founder of Building Technology Innovations through which she provides advice and mentorship to start-ups focused on the construction industry. She is also an executive in residence for the BC Tech Association and she serves on the National Zero Waste Council's construction taskforce. Helen is an architect registered in the UK and has an MBA from the University of BC. She is also one of the BC Sustainable Energy Association's climate action heroes and has been nominated as a YWCA Woman of Distinction. In 2017, she received the Vancouver Regional Construction Association/s Outstanding Woman in Construction Award.
