BIOS

Stacey Bernier – President & CEO, Creative Energy

Stacey Bernier is a well-known and highly respected figure in the sustainable and district energy sector in North America and Europe. He has 30 years of experience in executive and senior management positions, with extensive experience designing, building and managing sustainable district energy systems, utilizing a mixture of sustainable energy sources, such as sewer heat recovery, biomass and geo-exchange. This industry experience means he is regularly invited to speak at industry events or chair conferences. Stacey has held senior management roles with various energy companies, including his own award-winning sustainable energy design and build firm.

Under Stacey’s leadership, the Creative Energy vision is to expand on the success of Central Heat’s original city builders. Their innovative approach in the 1960s has enabled Creative Energy to build on Central Heat’s legacy system by working toward achieving carbon reductions of close to 80,000 tonnes in the downtown core alone. The original system can be expanded into other downtown neighborhoods, and new systems can be developed for the Cambie corridor. Creative Energy’s overall vision can also be replicated in cities and neighbourhoods across North America.

John Irving - Director of Engineering, City of Richmond

John Irving has over 25 years experience in land development engineering and local government administration.  In addition to overseeing the planning, design and construction for Richmond’s buildings and infrastructure, John is responsible for the development and operation of the City’s district energy initiatives.  Primarily delivered through the City’s wholly owned corporation, the Lulu Island Energy Company, district energy systems in Richmond now serve over 2000 residential units with rapid growth anticipated for the foreseeable future.​

Dale Mikklesen - Director of Development, SFU Community Trust 

Dale Mikklesen is responsible for all planning and development at UniverCity. He coordinates all municipal processes, from managing rezonings to overseeing building permit applications; and he is the primary liaison for development partners, communicating planning and design information to municipal governments, development partners, stakeholders, professional organizations and the public at large. As the Trust project manager, Mikkelsen manages project construction and timing, including RFP's, tenders, site work, and infrastructure improvements. He oversees public processes and charrettes, and tracks all aspects of UniverCity's green and sustainable building and development work, which involves both the promotion of innovation and the verification that developers are meeting UniverCity's ambitious green building requirements. Previously, Mikkelsen was the City of Vancouver's project planner for the 2010 Olympic Athlete's Village. He also acted as Vancouver's Green Building Planner. 

Chris Baber - Neighborhood Energy Manager, City of Vancouver

Chris managed the development and ongoing operations of the Southeast False Creek Neighbourhood Energy Utility (NEU), which is North America’s first district heating system to utilize waste heat recovered from untreated sewage.  The NEU is a financially self-sustaining utility which provides space heat and hot water to 4.5 million square feet of mixed-use development, and is rapidly expanding to serve the growing neighbourhood.  In addition, Chris is responsible for the implementation of the Vancouver Neighbourhood Energy Strategy, which targets high density neighbourhoods for new low-carbon thermal energy supply.

Trent Berry - Chair, Creative Energy 

Trent Berry is a management consultant and economist with 20 years of experience in policy, planning, technology, and infrastructure development. He earned a Bachelor of Science in Land Use and Environmental Studies at the University of Saskatchewan and a Masters in Resource Management from Simon Fraser University.

Trent takes pride in many of his projects, but the one he thinks about most is the district energy system that Reshape helped develop for Southeast False Creek, which includes Vancouver’s Olympic Village. Trent was involved from the very first screening of sustainability features for this new neighbourhood and through the commissioning and operation of the new Neighbourhood Energy Utility, which captures waste heat from raw sewage. “I was able to see the whole lifecycle from an idea to a full business analysis to ownership and operating decisions to rates and policy development. And what I like most is my almost-daily bike ride past the energy centre, which won an architectural award.”

Beau Jarvis - SVP Development, Wesgroup Properties

Beau is responsible for leading all commercial, residential and mixed use developments at Wesgroup.  His diverse development portfolio consists of master-planned and mixed-use communities, high- and low-rise condominiums, retail, industrial parks and office buildings.  In addition to overseeing all development projects and the related development teams, Beau’s responsibilities also include stakeholder engagement, government relations and land acquisitions.  Beau is on the Board of Directors and is a member of the Executive Committee of the Urban Development Institute.
