What do the words “public consultation meeting” mean to you?
Whether they are objecting against high rises, casinos or bike lanes, community advocates are growing increasingly vocal and well-organized. The City of Vancouver recently delayed several neighbourhood plans after hundreds of residents showed up at City Hall to raise their concerns. In Lynn Valley, “anti-development activists” (Globe and MailOct 12, 2013) forced their council last week to scale back the size of a town center project. And there are numerous other examples of their effectiveness. Neighbourhood groups are a force that both developers and councils need to recognize and work with.
Who are these neighbourhood advocates and what do they really want? How can things be improved? How can we engage more residents (the "silent majority") earlier in the process?
