The City of Vancouver is seeking to achieve carbon-neutral new construction by 2020, with a focus on passive design measures. Since 2020 is only a few short years away, how will these carbon-neutral standards affect your future projects?

Sean PanderGreen Building Program Manager, City of Vancouver
Sean will provide an overview of the development of Vancouver’s Carbon Neutral Building Strategy, its focus on improving the energy performance of building envelopes, and potential implications for UDI members.
 
Sean is a professional engineer with urban planning training. He has been at the forefront of local energy conservation and renewable energy planning and policy work for the past 15 years. He was integral in implementing the City’s original Climate Protection Plan and more recently led the team in the development of the City's Greenest City 2020 Action Plan. Sean currently leads the City’s Green Building Program team tasked with developing strategies, programs, policies and regulations aimed at having greenhouse gas emissions from all existing buildings and industries reduced by 20% and to achieve carbon-neutral new construction by 2020.
  
Tomas O’Leary Co-Founder and Managing Director, Passive House Academy, Ireland
Tomas will provide an introduction to passive building design and the Passive House standard and its applicability to high-rise buildings.  
 
Tomas designed, built and lives in the first Certified Passive House in the English-speaking world. He is an enthusiastic and passionate advocate for all things Passive House, a jovial and motivational educator and presenter, an experienced research scientist and environmental entrepreneur. He is globally accredited by the Passivhaus Institut as a Certifier of Passive House buildings, and is in the process of certifying several projects in British Columbia as well as the tallest Passive House building in the world (Manhattan).
 
Luke FalkAssistant Vice President, Related Companies, New York City
Luke will present on the challenges and benefits of developing a 26-storey multi-unit residential Passive House tower being built at Cornell University in New York.
 
Luke supports the implementation of Related Companies’ corporate sustainability strategy, which includes enhancing the energy performance of new and existing buildings and the incorporation of innovative technologies. Prior to joining Related, Luke was a project manager for the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority where he managed numerous state-wide energy efficiency and green building programs targeting the multifamily housing market; the collective budget of these programs exceeded $250 million. Luke serves as a Lecturer at Columbia University, where he has taught in the graduate-level Sustainability Management program since 2009.
