We are excited to welcome back BC's Minister Responsible for Housing, the Honourable Rich Coleman! He is also the Minister of Natural Gas Development and Deputy Premier.
On March 25, the Building Act (Bill 3) became law. This represents a significant milestone in modernizing B.C.’s building regulatory system, as it creates more consistent building requirements throughout the province. It is a critical step in creating a more efficient and effective building regulatory system.
This Act introduces three main changes to B.C.’s building regulatory system:
Consistency: Establishes the Province as the sole authority to set building requirements and removes the powers of local governments to impose their own requirements (e.g. green roofs). The objective is to create more consistent building requirements across B.C., while still providing local governments with flexibility to meet their needs.
Innovation: Supports local governments and other local authorities through the implementation of a provincial review process to evaluate innovative building proposals.
Competency: Establishes qualification requirements for building officials to improve consistency in how the B.C. Building Code is interpreted, applied and enforced.
Come hear from Minister Rich Coleman about what the new Building Act means for the development industry.
