Honourable BC Premier John Horgan Honourable Selina Robinson 36th Premier of British Columbia Minister of Municipal Affairs and Housing BC NDP BC NDP
BIOS
HONOURABLE BC PREMIER JOHN HORGAN Premier John Horgan is the MLA for the new riding of Langford-Juan de Fuca. He was first elected to the Legislature in 2005 as MLA for Juan de Fuca, and has been re-elected three times. In 2014, he became the leader of the BC New Democratic Party, and on July 18, 2017, he became Premier of British Columbia. John is the first to tell you that much of his success in life comes from the faith others had in him — a generous gift he’s committed to giving back to the people of BC.
A husband and father, John and his wife Ellie have two grown sons. John and his siblings were raised in Saanich by his mother, after his father passed away when he was very young. John grew up playing sports and was a natural leader at school, on the basketball court and in the lacrosse box.
As a young man, John worked several jobs to save up the funds to go to university: delivering newspapers, waiting tables and driving delivery trucks. But the job that made the most impact on him was working at a pulp mill in Ocean Falls – a tiny remote village on B.C.’s rugged central coast. John went on to earn his Bachelor's and Master's degrees at Trent University in Ontario and Sydney University in Australia. A meeting with Tommy Douglas sparked his interest in social democracy and he went on to work for Members of Parliament in Ottawa.
In 2001, John started a management and research consulting company helping both private and public sector organizations. One day in 2004, one of John’s son’s friends heard John hollering at the TV about something the BC Liberals did. He put John on the spot and asked him, “What are you going to do about it?” John took up the challenge for his sons and their friends - and asked them to help out. A cancer survivor, John fought hard as an MLA and Official Opposition Leader in the legislature on the issues that matter to people: improving our health care system, fixing the housing crisis, standing up against school cuts and closures, and advocating for better seniors’ care.
As premier, he’s working to deliver on the NDP government’s priorities: making life more affordable, improving the services people count on, and creating good jobs for people throughout B.C.
HONOURABLE SELINA ROBINSON Selina Robinson was elected as the MLA for Coquitlam-Maillardville in 2013 and re-elected in 2017. She is the Minister of Municipal Affairs and Housing. Selina served as the Official Opposition spokesperson for mental health and addictions, seniors, local government and sports. Born and raised in the suburbs of Montreal, Selina has been actively engaged in the Coquitlam community since moving there nearly 20 years ago.
As a former city councilor, Selina advocated for the rights of taxpayers, fought to protect the health of children and families by introducing a local ban on cosmetic pesticides, and worked to improve access for people with disabilities as chair of the Coquitlam Universal Access-Ability Advisory Committee. Prior to being elected, Selina had a home-based family therapy practice, was the Director of Development for SHARE Family and Community Services and was a Counselling Instructor and Program Developer at the University of British Columbia’s Life and Learning Centre and Vancouver Community College. Selina lives with her husband Dan in the Ranch Park neighbourhood of Coquitlam-Maillardville where they raised their now adult children, Aaron and Leya.
