Claire Immega from Singleton Urquhart Reynolds Vogel LLP will provide information for both commercial and residential landlords in the COVID-era about:
- Tenant insolvencies, defaults and foreclosures: What to look for, how to anticipate insolvency, and steps to consider early in the process.
- An overview of CCAA and bankruptcy proceedings and what commercial and residential landlord creditors can expect in these proceedings.
- Strategies for getting paid outstanding and future rent and expenses, and protecting a landlord’s interests when tenant insolvencies are on the horizon.
- Insolvency/bankruptcy regimes including CCAA and references to key government programs such as CEWS and CECRA.
This presentation will be helpful for those owning and managing both commercial and residential portfolios who are concerned about how to maintain cash flow and manage delinquency through the immediate COVID era and the possible ensuing recession.

Claire Immega, Partner - Singleton Urquhart Reynolds Vogel LLP
Claire Immega has a broad civil litigation practice with a focus on real estate litigation. She is a member of our Commercial Litigation, Insurance, Commercial Real Estate and Professional Liability Groups.
She delivers focused results based on an in-depth understanding of her clients’ business needs. She is also passionate about Vancouver business and community interests, and chairs the firm’s Diversity and Inclusion Committee.
Claire represents commercial and residential landlords and property managers, real estate owners and developers, corporate stakeholders, and a wide variety of regulated professionals. She regularly appears in British Columbia Supreme Court, the British Columbia Court of Appeal, and a variety of regulatory bodies and administrative tribunals, and has assisted clients before the Supreme Court of Canada.
Huey Lee, Partner - KPMG Canada
Huey Lee leads KPMG’s Rapid Response Team in British Columbia, focused on helping companies through turbulent times. Their objective during the current Covid-19 pandemic is to help clients to react and recover with a particular focus on liquidity, stakeholder management and business restructuring.
As a partner in KPMG’s Deal Advisory practice and Leader of its Restructuring & Turnaround team in BC, Huey works with a dedicated team of Deal Advisory professionals who help clients through their business challenges.
Over the course of his career, Huey has gained a broad range of experience from working in public practice and banking. He has further shaped his practice working with companies of all sizes and across many industries including real estate, forestry, mining and resources, financial services, consumer business and manufacturing. His focus is on helping clients navigate through corporate restructuring, mergers, acquisitions, divestitures, distressed and turnaround situations.
Mitchell H. Gropper Q.C., Partner - Farris LLP (moderator)
Mitchell joined Farris in July 1998 after spending the majority of the previous 28 years with the Vancouver office of McCarthy Tétrault LLP. He served as their Managing Partner from 1988 to 1990. Prior to joining that firm, he spent three years as a professor in the Faculty of Law at Western University in London, Ontario.
Mitchell has an active practice, often giving advice in complex transactions, including to boards of directors and independent committees of boards of directors; corporations and directors in “going private” transactions and in mergers and acquisitions of public and private corporations. In his real estate practice, Mitchell has been involved in various transactions, financings and complex debt restructurings including advising the City of Vancouver on the restructuring of the Olympic Village real estate project.
In 2012 he was awarded a Zenith Award by Lexpert as one of 40 leading Canadian lawyers. He is rated by Lexpert as one of Vancouver’s leading lawyers in energy, mergers & acquisitions, corporate finance, mid-market advisory services, income funds and corporate commercial (one of only three lawyers recognized in three categories), one of Canada’s 40 “Deal-Makers”, one of Canada’s 100 most creative lawyers, and one of Canada’s 100 leading cross-border transaction lawyers.
Mitchell is currently the Chancellor, and a director of, University of Canada West, and has served as a director of Diversified Regulatory Inc., Catalyst Paper Inc, Crew Gold Inc, and Concert Properties Ltd.
Mitchell has participated in several continuing legal education programs including: Directors’ Duties and the Business Judgement Rule; Corporate Governance; Mergers and Acquisitions and the Role of the Board; Innovative Financing Structures; Executive Retention in M&A Transactions.
