Event Description:
Join our Project Profile series as we hear from Purpose Driven Development & Planning and GBL Architects Inc., trailblazing the creation of housing for women, by women. This event is open to all UDI members.
Working with Vancouver-based
Soroptimist International of Vancouver (SIV), Purpose Driven Development & Planning is developing a 13-storey building at 546 West 13th Avenue that will feature a mix of 135 unit types, including studios, one-bedroom, two-bedroom and three-bedroom units geared toward seniors, single mothers and their children, and working women.
Their approach to design and development will:
  • Create affordable housing options for women
  • Support women to achieve financial independence and housing security
  • Incorporate participatory decision-making in key aspects of design and development process
  • Implement gender-based approach in the project design and development

PANEL
Amela Brudar, Principal, GBL Architects
Amela joined GBL Architects in 1994 becoming an associate in 1999 and a principal in 2008. She is passionate about the art of architecture and is always questioning and refining the vision and direction of the firm.
Amela also acts as a managing partner of GBL Architects and is responsible for running daily operations of a 75 person architectural and interior design studio.
In her 25+ years of experience in Canada, Ms. Brudar has been involved in many complex, multi-phase, mixed use projects. Most recently Amela is actively engaged in the redevelopment of Richmond Centre in Richmond BC. This two phase projects spans over 27.5 Ac and includes over two million square feet of residential area in 12 towers and midrise buildings, and over 500,000 sf of retail, restaurant and community service space.
With SIV project, in addition to providing design direction, Amela’s role was instrumental in assembling the team of women leaders in the industry. This unique approach is the first of its kind in Canada.
Amela is actively involved with the AIBC where she is mentoring several intern architects, acts as an oral reviewer and is a member of Qualifications Committee.
She was a member and a Chair of Vancouver’s Design Panel from 2017-2019.

Carla Guerrera, Founder & CEO, Purpose Driven Development & Planning

Carla was recently appointed as a Board Member to the Thames Estuary Growth Board helping to lead the revitalization of the world-famous Thames River and the largest growth opportunity in the UK. Locally she also serves on the British Columbia Pavilion Corporation. Carla is an international thought leader and speaker on innovative approaches to development and city building.

Annelise van der Veen, Development Manager, Purpose Driven Development & Planning
With a passion for affordable housing and building equitable communities, Annelise combines her experience working in local and regional government with her collaborative and community-focused approach to planning and development to deliver projects that ensure communities will thrive.
As the Junior Development Manager at Purpose Driven Development Annelise works on a range of mixed-use and affordable housing projects across BC with non profit organizations, First Nations, and municipalities.

Emily Vinet, Manager, Development – Peterson
As a Development Manager, Emily provides project management, strategic planning, and financial analysis to new-build development projects. With extensive master plan experience in Vancouver and Burnaby, Emily’s experience with 15 acre+ projects transforming industrial lands into thriving mixed-use communities brings vital knowledge to Peterson’s diverse development practice. Blending together private and public sector environments and working with diverse groups of partners and stakeholders, Emily is known to her colleagues as a key creative collaborator.
