In 2001, Finning International Inc., the world’s largest Caterpillar dealer, donated 18.5-acres of land in the False Creek Flats to British Columbia’s leading post-secondary institutions the University of British Columbia, Simon Fraser University, British Columbia Institute of Technology and Emily Carr University of Art + Design as equal Shareholders in Great Northern Way Campus Ltd. (GNW Trust).
Today, the Trust manages the land, assets and income of the site to steward the Shareholders Vision of transforming an under utilized industrial property into a vibrant urban campus community of creators, entrepreneurs and educators across the Centre for Digital Media district. This themed digital district includes academic programs in digital media, a new Emily Carr University of Art + Design campus, mixed-use real estate developments, public spaces, university-oriented live-work residences, galleries, artist studios and tech start-up space for industry professionals as well as a future station for the Broadway Subway Line.
